STATEMENT FROM MINNESOTA VIKINGS
REGARDING MSFC STADIUM DESIGN PROPOSAL

The Minnesota Vikings appreciate the work by the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC) to develop a stadium design and cost study for a new multi-purpose stadium on the current Metrodome site.  This design work makes an important contribution that will assist Minnesota policymakers and the Vikings as we evaluate options to keep the team in Minnesota for the next generation.

While we have had the opportunity to provide some input into the Commission stadium design project, we are not in a position at this time to endorse their proposal. Given the MSFC’s recent attempt to delay a stadium discussion for two years, we are moving forward with those leaders who want to resolve this issue in 2010. There is growing support among elected officials, business leaders, organized labor and Vikings fans to tackle this issue during the 2010 Legislative Session. We are encouraged by the increasing level of awareness that this issue needs to be resolved now in order to secure the long-term future of the team in Minnesota.

The new stadium is part of an economic development package that would revitalize the Downtown East area of Minneapolis. The proposed development would combine a creative entrepreneurial district with a unique place to live.

The development would include a Winter Garden transit station that will host indoor/outdoor activities for transit riders, neighborhood residents, downtown workers and attendees of stadium events. This transit stop is the connecting point between the current Hiawatha Line and future Central Corridor Line, where more than 60,000 daily riders will pass through.

The retractable-roof stadium would engage the city with an end zone view of downtown Minneapolis. It would also allow Minnesota to host another Super Bowl and other national events like NCAA basketball tournaments and soccer games.
